My Quilt Math is a small, independent set of free quilting calculators and the plain-English guides that go with them. No accounts, no app to install, no newsletter you have to join to see an answer. You type in your quilt's measurements, you get the numbers, you go cut your fabric.
Why it exists
Every quilt starts with arithmetic. How many strips of binding? Will one width of backing cover it, or do you have to piece it — and which way wastes less fabric? What size do you cut a square so the half-square triangle finishes at three inches? None of it is hard, exactly, but all of it is easy to get a little bit wrong, and a little bit wrong is an extra trip to the shop or a binding that comes up six inches short.
We built the tools we wanted on our own cutting tables: quick, honest, and clear about what they're assuming. Every calculator shows its formula, so you're never trusting a black box — you can check the math yourself and learn it for next time.
How it stays free
Two ways, and we want to be plain about both. Some of our guides include affiliate links — usually to Amazon — for tools and supplies we'd actually recommend, and we plan to add display ads to help cover costs. If you buy through an affiliate link, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That's it. We don't take sponsorships in exchange for telling you a particular ruler is the best ruler. See our privacy & disclosure page for the full details.
A note on the numbers
Quilting math has conventions, not laws. Different teachers add a different amount of "wiggle" to a binding estimate; different patterns piece their blocks differently. Our calculators use widely accepted formulas and sensible cutting-waste allowances, and we tell you when a number is an estimate rather than an exact cut. Always measure your own quilt and double-check before you cut — fabric doesn't come with an undo button.
