Batting Size Calculator
Add the recommended quilting overhang to your top, then match it to the nearest standard packaged batting size — or get the yardage to buy off a wide roll.
How the batting math works
Like backing, batting should hang past the quilt top so it can shift slightly while you quilt without leaving a corner short. Four inches a side is standard for longarm work; two is fine on a domestic machine.
then match to the next standard package, or buy by the yard off a roll
Package vs. by the yard
Packaged batting comes in bed sizes (Crib, Twin, Queen…). Off a roll you only buy the length you need, which is cheaper for odd sizes. Compare batting types before you buy — loft and fiber change the look a lot.
